You are perhaps aware of cloud computing or cloud based services, wherein you get virtual servers, databases, hardware support such as storage drives and also software among others. There are two types of cloud based services. One is public cloud which is shared. The other is private cloud which is dedicated. Private cloud has all the benefits of public cloud but with a few more advantages. These can be desirable or undesirable depending on the needs of your business and preferences. • A private cloud is a little more than a public cloud and the difference is not just in how it is managed. It is possible to have dedicated public cloud but that is not very common. You would end up sharing the infrastructure available as a service when you opt for public cloud. A private cloud is exclusive infrastructure of your company. No other company or business gets access to your servers. All the software and resources that you host on your private cloud and then provide access to your employees or whoever you authorize will be exclusively available to those you approve. You can have complete control of the entire infrastructure available via your private cloud. You get to choose what kind of software or other resources you would host and thus use. Like a public cloud, you can scale up private cloud infrastructure and scale down, there is substantial flexibility and all advantages of cloud computing are untouched. A private cloud would work wonders for a medium sized company or a large enterprise, especially one that has people working in multiple cities, states and possibly countries. When a centralized technology infrastructure needs to be made available across regions and to remote locales, private cloud is the best way forward.

• The most notable disadvantage of a private cloud is the cost. A company needs to set up the infrastructure and then manage it. A company will only get access to resources that it has developed or procured. Scaling up and down may incur additional costs.

• Beyond the aforementioned advantages, the primary reason why companies think of using a private cloud is security. No one but the company gets to choose the firewall, the server and network security and every measure that will protect the infrastructure and the resources used by the employees of the organization. A company doesn’t have to be at the disposal of a public cloud service provider’s policies pertaining to security.
